Note that you can enrol for Open UAS studies at the maximum of 50 ECTS credits per semester. One person’s enrolments exceeding 50 ECTS credits are deleted in the enrolment order. Paying attention to this is important when planning your studies.

Please also notice, that Xamk degree students cannot enrol on Open UAS courses.

Learning outcomes:

  • You are able to express yourself in versatile Finnish in everyday situations both orally and in writing.
  • You are able to follow slow conversation, write short texts and communicate spontaneously in versatile everyday situations.
  • You have command of different phrases, structures and vocabulary (CEFR level A2.1 – A.2.2). You will get to know some basic vocabulary of your own professional field.
  • You are familiar with a large variety of grammatical features, like passive voice, simple past tense, conditional mood, MA-infinitives and object of a sentence.
  • You are able to expand your vocabulary and knowledge of language usage also independently using different sources.
  • You can display familiarity in Finnish culture.

Contents and methods:

  • Which phrases and what kind of vocabulary and grammatical knowledge you need for everyday communication and for understanding and writing simple texts with varying topics?
  • Which sources and tools you can use in order to continue your elementary Finnish studies during the course and also independently?
  • How to use your cultural knowledge in communication?

This course is organised 100% online and students have the opportunity to participate in real-time classes. Real-time classes on Teams are organised twice a week, on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 4 pm and on Thursdays from 8:30 to 9:30 am according to the following schedule:

Notice that the real-time online sessions will not be recorded. Participating in the real-time online sessions is not compulsory for Xamk Pulse open UAS students. However, we highly recommend that students participate in the real-time online sessions, as completing this course entirely on their own requires students to be proactive and have good study skills.

Note that timetable changes are possible. Teaching is in Finnish and in English.

The course evaluation is based on:

  • active participation to the online lessons
  • completion of the course assignments and tests

Notice that all assignments must be submitted following the given schedule, by the end of the course. Late submissions are not allowed. The course also includes independent and group work.

The course covers 5 ECTS credits, totalling 135 hours of student work. The number of hours is theoretical and varies according to student effort.

Assessment methods and criteria:
The course Finnish 3 is arranged at the entry-level of your studies. The assessment emphazises criteria a – d and f. A student that has reached the level 3 is able to
a) use phrases, quite versatile vocabulary and grammatical knowledge (CEFR levels A2.1 – A2.2) in everyday communication.
b) look for information from the text books and other information sources of the elementary Finnish.
c) identify various contexts and interrelated tasks.
d) communicate in versatile everyday situations.
f) work as team-members in a goal-oriented way.
