Intro to Virtual Production (nonstop start), 2 ECTS cr

Intro to virtual production (2 ECTS) is implemented as part of Xamk’s project Utilisation of Virtual Production and Virtual Delivery in the Creative Industries
 
The Finnish Service Centre for Continuous Learning and Employment SECLE has granted funding to develop training offerings that respond to the competence needs of creative industry professionals, as well as to develop and establish models for continuous learning. The trainings delivered within the project are designed to be practice-oriented and working life-driven, and can be completed flexibly alongside work.

Learning outcomes:

  • you understand the concept of virtual production along with common virtual production technologies, workflows, and pipelines 
  • you understand the benefits, limitations, and trade‑offs of virtual production compared to traditional production methods 
  • You understand the basics and fundamentals of real‑time systems; you are familiar with the virtual production facilities, tools, and further learning opportunities available through The Medusa Virtual studio at Kouvola kampus

Contents:

  • What is virtual production and how has it impacted media?
  • What are the basic and common virtual production tools? 
  • How does virtual production differ from traditional production? 
  • What are real-time systems, and what is their role in virtual production? 
  • What technologies are available at Meduusa facilities? 
  • What tools, workflows, or pipelines could support a scene, and why is the chosen approach suitable for this situation?

Methods:

  • Students can progress at their own pace alongside work and life; there are no deadlines for assignments.
  • This is independent studies; the only group assignment is to engage with forum/feedback discussions with peers.
  • There are no scheduled group discussions.
  • All lectures are pre-recorded and available throughout entirety of course
  • Student workload: Approximately 54 hours in total; the recommended completion time for the course alongside work is 2–3 months.

The course completion period will end on 31 May 2027. All assignments and other course requirements must be completed and submitted by that date, irrespective of when the student enrolled in the course.

Assessment methods and criteria:

  • This course has short mini lectures, tasks, quizzes, and students will be required to share ideas and engage in peer reviews.
  • The evaluation is based on task completeness, and in addition the feedback required by funder (SECLE).
