Enrollment for the spring courses is open till 14 June 2026, and you can start your studies within a week after enrollment. This course is also available in fall – enrollment opens in June and the first start is in August 2026.
Please note that lecturers will not provide guidance or assess courses between 1 June and 16 August 2026.

Required previous skills: The course is suitable for students without prior experience with Finnish language. This is an online course, so Internet access and computer or laptop with audio equipment are required.

Learning outcomes:
After the completion of the course:
- you are able to communicate in Finnish in some basic everyday situations,
- you can use simple phrases, express statements and ask questions and you know basic vocabulary,
- you are familiar with some key features of the Finnish grammar,
- you can apply your skills in practice, mainly orally but also in writing,
- you are able to independently expand your vocabulary resources and improve your Finnish skills using different sources.
Content:
- introducing oneself,
- greetings,
- getting acquainted,
- simple conversation related to e.g. shopping and eating out,
- elementary grammar.
Methods:
The course is implemented in the online environment (Open Learn). There are no meetings. The studies are based on independent work with the course material. The course includes practices with videos and interactive tasks. The assignments and the exam are to be completed by the specified deadline. The prerequisite of passing the course is successful completion of the online exam (at least 50% of the answers should be correct). Two attempts of taking the exam are automatically allowed.
A two-credit course corresponds to approximately 54 hours of student workload. The number of hours is theoretical and varies depending on the student’s effort.
Study material:
The course material can be found on the course platform in Open Learn. The study material is presented in the format of Power Point presentations, videos, audio material, and links to outside internet sources.

The teacher has one month to give a grade after the student has completed all learning tasks. We will send you an electronically signed transcript of records within about a week after you have received the grade in the Peppi system. The transcript serves as a document if, for example, you are applying for credit for your studies at another university. Studies can also be credited at Xamk if you come to us as a degree student.
